First of all you can use a shop vac to suck out the lint. While this will work on your dryer lint screen as well as the first few inches into the dryer duct, the shop vac won’t be able to clean out the whole duct pipe. If you don’t want to purchase any other tools simply insert a wire coat hanger that has been un raveled into the duct and scrape out excess lint.
Some companies sell an extension for your vacuum cleaner designed especially to remove lint in hard to reach places.
The next best option is a Dryer Vent Brush. These are usually built to be the same size as the diameter of the dryer vents which enables you to simply insert the brush up the pipe and rotate it as you are slowly pulling it out. Do this a couple of times to ensure complete removal of lint.
Some of these dryer vent brushes have an extra long extension on them and have flexible arms designed especially for cleaning long vent ducts. You can clean from both inside and outside to be sure that no lint is left in the pipes.
Another type of brush is the lint trap brush. This is thinner in comparison to to a dryer vent brush and is longer too. This is especially for removing lint from within the ducts in the dryer under the lint traps.
A real fancy cleaning tool is the Rotary Vent Cleaner. A rotary duct brush attaches to a rotary drilling machine. This is the most effective way of cleaning air ducts and is more often used by professional dryer duct cleaning companies.
Dryer vent Cleaning Kits are also available and come with brushes and a vacuum extension. As the quality improves so price increases so shop around for something that is within your price range and you are bound to find something.
Safety Precautions when Cleaning your Dryer Vents
Always make sure that the dryer is unplugged from the electricity point or that the gas is turned OFF!
You will probably need a screw driver to unscrew the clamp at the back of the dryer and the same with the attachment at the wall. Do so carefully so as not to damage the vent pipe, especially if it’s made from plastic or vinyl.
You should do Dryer Duct Cleaning a couple of times a year. If you do use dryer vent cleaner equipment, your job will be far easier.
Dryer Vent Kits should be cleaned with caution since the material in the vent pipe is a bit flimsy and it might be best replacing the whole vent rather than damaging it and causing leaks.
