Dryer Vent Duct
The safest Dryer Vent Duct is the metal dryer vent and not the white plastic, vinyl or aluminum foil vent ducts. When it comes to drying clothes in an electric dryer, you will already know just how much your electricity bill increases when you use it. A dryer duct that is good quality and that has been properly installed and is regularly cleaned will help to save energy and money in the long run.
There are many types of clothes dryer venting options but not all of them are the safest. There are also a lot of cheaper and more attractive dryer vent kits but these are usually only used as indoor dryer vents or as temporary solutions to a vent duct repair.
Which Dryer Vent Duct Work Best?
The standard size of the dryer duct is 4 inches in diameter but there are some 6 inch diameter options available too. You will find it easier to get other drying vent parts if the vent is 4 inches.
There is a metal dryer vent, aluminum dryer vent, vinyl and plastic dryer vent but the safest of these is the drying vent made of metal. It is also sometimes a requirement in certain buildings to only use metal dryer exhaust vents for obvious safety reasons.
A rigid metal duct which is smooth inside is best. This is so that lint can be transported efficiently and smoothly through the duct and to prevent lint build up inside the duct.
If you have to run your dryer vent pipe around a corner then a flexible duct elbow can solve this problem. However if you are running the pipe for quite a distance it is recommended to keep it straight for easier and more effective cleaning. You can imagine that at the corner there will be a considerable build up of lint over time and unless you can reach that point, the vent duct will get clogged.
Safety Advice.
In terms of dryer vent duct maintenance you are going to have to clean the dryer vent on a regular basis, depending on how often you use the dryer and the types of clothes that you dry.
If you want to do a quick and easy cleaning job, then first of all install a solid dryer duct that is made of metal. Hardly any lint will be trapped in the duct and the cleaning process will be quick and pain free!
If you don’t have a good dryer vent pipe installed then you are going to have to purchase an additional dryer vent cleaning tool/s.
Don’t ever let your dryer vent get clogged up. This will cause your dryer to have to work overtime to dry the clothes which results in more energy consumption and more importantly over heating of the dryer. This is a fire hazard.
Costs
Prices vary but generally you can expect to pay around thirty dollars for just the vent. Remember that you will have to purchase other dryer vent parts separately. You will need a dryer vent hood, flexible elbows if going round corners, duct tape, screws and installation gadgets and any tools that you don’t already have.
If you want to make life really easy then install a dryer vent kit for now, but this should always only be a temporary solution and not something to be done in the long term. Read this page here on Dryer Vent Kits to find out the pro’s and con’s of this short cut option.
